My Dear Fellow Alabama Fans:
While confined here in the Auburn City Jail, I came across your recent statements calling my previous activities "Unwise and Foolish." Seldom do I pause and answer criticism of my work and ideas. I am in Auburn because injustice is here. Just as the prophets of Bear Bryant Left their trailer parks and carried their "Thus saith the Bear" far beyond the boundaries of Tuscaloosa County, And just as Saint Nick has left his village of Miami and carried the gospel of The Bear to the far corners of Alabama, so am I compelled to carry the gospel of killing trees because Auburn won the National Championship.
You deplore the winning taking place in Auburn, but your actions, I'm sorry to say fail to reflect the dire need for revenge. You may well ask: "why direct action? Why poisoning trees? Why fake audio tapes? Isn't message board posting, or calling in radio shows enough?" While I commend you for this, it is not enough. We must kill trees, lie, and take direct action. The Alabama fan has many pent up resentments and latent frustrations with Auburn fans, and he must release them. I have tried to say that my normal and healthy mind can be channeled into the creative outlet of nonviolent direct action. And now my actions are being termed extremist.
If I have said anything in this letter that overstates the truth and indicates an unreasonable impatience, I beg you to forgive me. If I have said anything that understates the truth and indicates my having a patience that allows me to settle for anything less than brotherhood, I beg You to forgive me.
Yours for the cause of Auburn going down, Harvey Updyke
